Can We Talk About Headaches For A Minute?

For those of you who have never had a headache, never felt the skull crushing pain of a migraine...well this post is not for you! But it may be for someone you know!

I have suffered from headaches on a weekly basis for as long as I can remember. They have ranged from a mild throbbing in my temples to a full blown migraine making me nauseous(or worse), where my fingers start to tingle and my arms go numb, my vision getting fuzzy like the static on an old tv. I've been to the doctor, pills, shots, cat scans, acupuncture, diet, but nothing seemed to help. Welcome doTERRA essential oils!

I am proud to say that I am no longer getting headaches on a weekly basis, not even the little ones! I might have a headache maybe once a month now and have found my perfect solution! Just another way the oils have helped me and my family!

There are several essential oil combinations out there for headaches so I am going to share the ones that have worked best for me!

When I start feeling a headache come on and I know it's not going to be a bad one, I'll pull out my
peppermint and use a drop on each temple along m hairline (I made the mistake of getting too close to m eyes the first time and OUCH!!!), massaging gently for about 60 seconds. A lot of people recommended the PastTense at the base of my skull for headaches but I have found that Deep Blue works better for me, it relieves my headache more quickly and tends to keep it gone for longer than the past tense. (Don't get me wrong, PastTense works really well for most people, just didn't seem to cut the mustard for me)

So peppermint on my temples and deep blue on my neck at the base of my skull and I typically remain headache free!

Now if I wake up with a headache, preventative care is out the window! I've tried the peppermint and deep blue but neither seemed to dull the ache so I did some digging. After reading through a ton of testimonials, a few from friends even, I tried a few other things and have found them to really help me! I start with a small bowl and approximately 2 cups for freezing cold water. I add 2-3 drops of the peppermint oil to it then soak it all up into a facecloth which I then alternate applying to my forehead and the back of my neck. This helps so much!!

A drop of Frankincense on my finger then applied directly to the roof of my mouth and within minutes, my headache has slowed to a dull throb and after about 15 minutes it's completely gone!

I had a REALLY bad migraine and a friend let me try a drop of their Helichrysum on the roof of my mouth and the migraine was gone almost instantly. Now the headache did return a little bit later on, but it was not as severe and I've read that a few more applications of the Helichrysum that day and the headache would have stayed away for good! Incredible right? If I hadn't experienced it myself, I would have believed it myself! Helichrysum is a more expensive oil so thank goodness for the Loyalty Rewards Program! I am expecting my own bottle of Helichrysum in the mail tomorrow and all I had to pay for was the shipping and small redemption fee and I cannot wait to try it out to completely conquer the migraine! Click here to learn about the Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP).

Now I know that some of these little tricks and tips don't always work for everyone so here are some other headache remedies:

-Dab a small drop of lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil on each temple. (remember to apply as far away from your eye as possible...lesson learned!!)

-Raising the temperature of the hands 15°F by soaking them in warm water with a drop of lavender and ginger oils seems to short-circuit a vascular headache such as a migraine by regulating circulation.

-  In a roller bottle
   2 drops Marjoram
   2 drops Geranium
   2 drops Helichrysum
   2 drops Peppermint
   2 drops PastTense
   2 drops Frankincense
   1 drop Lavender
Top with fractionated coconut oil and apply to back of the neck, forehead, temples, jaw/cheek in  front of each ear.

For nausea caused by headaches: 2 drops of Ginger to 1tblsp of sea salt then dissolve in 1 quart of cool water. Soak up the liquid in a facecloth and use as a cold compress.

Gardening with Essential Oils!

I've got my garden started, the little plants are starting to pop up in their little squares of dirt..it's time to get them planted! I have no shame when it comes to sharing my love for doTERRA Essential Oils and it's no different now in the garden! I want to go all natural this year and see how my garden grows so I started "digging" for information online and am going to share some of the better information that I've found!

Sprays: Add drops of essential oil to water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of natural liquid soap such as castile soap to act as a surfactant, which will ensure uniform coverage on leaves and insect bodies. Spray directly onto fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc.

String: Soak a string in a mixture of water and essential oils. Hang the string between crops in the garden. This will deter flying insects.

Cloth Strips: Use a drop of essential oil on strips of fabric and hang throughout the garden. Add more drops as needed.

Cotton Ball: Use for animals or pests that like to burrow. Place directly on top of nests, burrows, etc.

Cartons & Containers: Bury the carton into the ground up to the top of the container. Add drops of essential oil to deter slugs, snails, mice, ground insects, etc.
Here are a few recipes to try. Remember that essential oils are powerful. Apply sparingly. Several applications, every few days may be necessary:

Insect Repellent for Plants
15 Drops of TerraShield Proprietary Blend
8 oz. Water
Couple Drops of Pure Liquid Castile Soap
Combine ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray the leaves, including underneath. Apply with a brush if you want to be more specific in application.

General Plant Protection
5 Drops Lavender
5 Drops Thyme
8 oz. Water
Combine ingredients. Use a spray bottle to mist the plants.

Mildew & Fungus Spray
1 Teaspoon High Proof Alcohol (alternatively, leave this out and add 1/2 tsp. of Baking Soda dissolved in the water.)
6 Drops each Melaleuca, Oregano, Thyme
8 oz. Water
Combine the first two ingredients. Shake to incorporate. Add water to oil mixture and place into a spray bottle. Spray in the evening when the sun cannot burn the leaves.

Vinegar is another great tool to have on hand when gardening. I use it a lot for cleaning so I usually have some in the cupboard. I have recently discovered that it's a great natural herbicide! It is a great, safe and natural way to kill weeds in your garden..or anywhere for that matter, just b careful because it will kill your grass! I simply put the distilled vinegar in a spray bottle and use it full strength. It really is that easy!

There are plenty of ways to use vinegar when you are gardening; you can give acid loving plants a boost by watering them every once in a while with a 1 cup of distilled vinegar to 1 gallon of water mix, you can kill slugs by spraying them with a mix of 1 part distilled vinegar to 1 part water, you can even add 1 tablespoon of distilled vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a quart of water in a vase to preserve cut flowers or liven up droopy ones!!

Forget Spring, Lets Get Into Summer!!

Living in Alaska, it's not often we get summer weather as early as we have this year *knock on wood! While the flowers are starting to come up and everything is becoming green again for spring, we have had gorgeous, warm and sunny, summertime weather. I've got my veggie garden seeded and as I watch the buds start to peek up out of the warm dirt, my fingers itch to get them planted...early!!

It's the time of year for barbeques, beaches....allergies, and BUGS. I have to admit that this year I am pretty excited for everything that comes with summer because this year, I have essential oils in my life!

For some of us, the sun brings more than just warmth and summer..gorgeous sunny days mean bright red, itchy, painful sunburns! I can't be outside for more than 15 minutes without getting a burn regardless of the sunscreen I'd just slathered on, so every summer, I stock up on aloe vera plants because I can never seem to keep the stinking things alive! Well lucky for me I have my doTERRA Lavender!

Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils. It is a great anti-septic, pain-reliever, great for reducing stress and scars/stretch marks. The list is endless. It's a great support for first aid issues. I use lavender for just about everything, it is one of the best!

There are so many great doTERRA oils out there and with them being so versatile, you can use 1 oil for so many different things! The Melaleuca Oil is another one that I absolutely can't live without! Every time I crack open the bottle, memories of owies and tea tree oil hit and I feel comfort! It was one of the oils I remember my parents using on me when I was a kid!

Melaleuca is another great oil that can be used on sunburns but in my house, it's generally used on my 4 year old son because it can be used for sorts of different owies and infections, and has long been revered for it's antiseptic properties. The leaves of the Melaleuca tree have been used by aborigines for centuries to heal cuts, wounds and skin infections so it's is definitely a well used oil in my house! It is an excellent choice for wound care and tissue healing, and has long been known as a potent anti-fungal agent.

Melaleuca has been documented to kill many bacteria, viruses and fungi on contact, so it is excellent for cuts, wounds, burns and anywhere harmful bacteria can be found. With more than 90 different compounds combining to create this harmonious masterpiece, Melaleuca is nothing short of miraculous in it's effect.

Terrashield is doTERRA's all-natural, super-concentrated insect repellant formulated with a proprietary blend of 15 CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils that have been scientifically shown to repel insects more effectively than any other synthetic insect repellents. Just a small amount of Terrashield will provide powerful coverage and will last up to 6 hours per application. It smells great, can be used safely by everyone in the family without worry, and is pretty cheap too when compared to other insect repellent products!!

I get all kinds of allergy flair ups in spring and carried over into summer and they are no fun!! I've mentioned this allergy shot in a previous blog post but I wanted to share it again because its one I use often!!

2 Drops Peppermint
2 Drops Lavender
2 Drops Lemon

Another one of the many amazing things about doTERRA essential oils, is that you can use several of them to cook with! I will be putting together a separate blog post to share some FANTASTIC recipes to include some of my favorite essential oils but I will share a little teaser below!
